The Original 13th Texas Cavalry

The 13th Cavalry Regiment was organized at Crockett, Texas, during the winter of 1861-1862 with about 900 men. The original commanding officer and second in command were members of The Texas Senate, who resigned to form a regiment for the war effort.

One Company, Co. H, took on the name " Dreadnaughts", and that is a title we will carry with us. The original commanding officer of Co. H, Captain Thomas Stark, is pictured to the right with the original "Old Dreadnaughts" flag. Some of its members were from Centerville, Crockett, Madisonville.

In the summer of 1862 the 13th Texas Cavalry was dismounted and later assigned to O. Young's and Waul's Brigade in the Trans-Mississippi Department (Walker's Division).

The unit participated in various conflicts in Louisiana and Arkansas including the engagements at Pleasant Hill, LA, Mansfield, LA, Sabine Crossrads, LA and Jenkins' Ferry, AR.

The 13th Texas Cavalry disbanded during the late spring of 1865.
